You found us! This is the homepage of Spacebears Racing. We were a small group of grassroots racers based in the Mid-Atlantic. Nobody paid us to race -- we owned our cars, and they took us to work during the week. But on the weekends, our cars acquired numbers and hit the tracks. But times change and opportunities close; we no longer own the cars featured on these pages and we are not actively racing anymore. Will Spacebears Racing rise again? Perhaps. But in the meantime, this page (left largely unchanged from when we were active) will give you an idea of who we were and what we did.

Who We Are

The short answer is that we're a bunch of gearheads with sports cars that we love to put to the test. None of us had any racing experience to speak of, prior to getting our cars and taking them to the track. We're still not that great but we love what we do. Here's a bio on each driver and car:

Brian and the IROC-Z

Brian currently lives in Virginia with his wife, Kara. He is a journalist and she is a chemist. They usually attend races together, with Brian driving the IROC-Z and Kara taking the pretty pictures. He still owns a 1970 Dodge Charger and used to have both a 1998 Pontiac Firebird Formula and a 1988 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z.

He used to race the Firebird Formula, and all his races from the 1998 and 1999 seasons are with that car. In early 2000 he switched cars, selling the fast but expensive Formula and taking on a slow but cheap 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z, purchased as a birthday gift by a consortium of crazy friends. The IROC's most noted characteristic is the varied shades of red. The engine is an anemic 305 c.i. V8 optimistically rated at 190 hp mated to a horsepower-stealing 700R4 automatic. It is a car with great potential.

Brian's best timeslip is 13.66@104.3 with the Formula. His best with the IROC is 16.83@79.5, which is taking some getting used to. With the Formula, Brian has won in class at the V-V-F Dragathon III and the Royal GTO Club Session, and taken runner-up in MIR's ET Trophy class. The IROC is still going through shakedown and has not placed.

In addition to Spacebears Racing, Brian can be found online at Neptune. The IROC-Z and Formula are featured in the Gallery of Fine Art, and appear in Stories From the Garage and The O Pine with some regularity.

Josh and the Mustang

Josh is a network engineer and lives in Maryland. He is married to Anne, who works in some sort of administration capacity, but who unfortunately does not attend Spacebears Racing events. This is Josh's first sports car.

The Mustang is a white 1995 Ford Mustang GT. It is the last model year for the legendary 5.0L V8 (302 c.i.). His is an automatic. This car has been extensively worked over, and has the following performance modifications: K&N Filtercharger high-flow air intake with custom cold- air system, Auto Specialties aluminum underdrive pulleys, B&M Shiftplus (scheduled to be removed due to its suckiness), Flowmaster American Thunder cat-back exhaust system with two-chamber mufflers, 180-degree thermostat, cooling fan override switch, 3.73 rear gears, Trans-Go shift kit with one washer, Jet-Hot coated MAC shorty headers feeding a Tri-D H-pipe, power tune, and an Eibach/KYB suspension with BFGoodrich Comp T/A ZR4 tires. This
combination has put out 192 rwhp on a dyno, which should be about 240 at the flywheel. That's a good improvement over the factory rated 215.

Josh runs the most consistently in Spacebears Racing, as well he should with an automatic. His quickest run is 14.5@95.3, and his fastest run is 14.6@95.4. Although both Brian and Josh have respectable reaction times these days, Josh is the current RT King with a 0.502. Josh has taken runner-up honors in MIR's ET Trophy class.

In addition to Spacebears Racing, Josh can be found at Josh's Home Page. The Mustang is featured in many of the articles on Stories From the Garage (which provides instructions for many of the above modifications), has its own webpage at Josh's Mustang GT, and is listed in StangNet.

Where We Race

We race everywhere we can! Unfortunately, since the world doesn't stop for us on the weekends, we usually only make it to about two events per month. After each event, we review our standings and Brian writes up a report about the day. With this chart, you can try to catch us at an upcoming event and read about the cool stuff you missed! Plus it's always fun to go back and read our thoughts on long-past events, to see how much we've grown and changed. Or, sometimes, not.
